Want to know the secret to creating amazing content? No, it’s not that you have to be super witty, creative, or even a great writer (trust me I’m pretty average in those categories).
It’s not about your perfect Instagram filter, your SEO, or even your sentence structure.
It’s all about creating content that connects.
You need to know who you are talking to, what problems your readers are trying to solve, and what solutions you can provide. It’s really as simple as that.
Now it is simple, but it’s not necessarily easy. Here are a few tips to keep in mind as you embark on your journey of content creation.
The Secret to Creating Amazing Content
Establish your purpose
First, for each piece of content you write, establish the purpose and see how it aligns with the overall mission of your brand. This will not only help set expectations with your audience, but it will also give you more clarity on what you should create.
It can be challenging to establish a mission early on but the good news is that your mission can change as your brand evolves. Stick to a concrete mission statement and tweak it as necessary.
Then each time before you create on Instagram, your blog, or even live video, conduct a quick gut-check to see if the content aligns with your overarching goal/mission. Trust me it will make your life much easier.
Find your People
If you are trying to talk to everyone you are essentially talking to no one. If you don’t have a clear target audience or purpose, you will find that it’s easy to get lost in the noise online. Think about your ideal reader’s lifestyle, demographics, likes, dislikes, problems, concerns and pinpoint who that person is in real life. Then imagine as if you were having coffee with that reader in person; what kind of advice would you give? This interaction leads me to my third point: the coffee chat test.
Take the Coffee Chat Test
If your goal is to create content that resonates with your audience, put your content to the coffee chat test. Are you writing/speaking the same way you would be talking about this topic with a friend over coffee? Are you are evoking the same kind emotions, are you hitting the same sort of vulnerability, and are you conveying the same level of honesty? The grammar, punctuation, and style will clearly vary between the two scenarios the core message should stay consistent.
Become a Professional Stalker
If you don’t know what your audience wants to hear, it’s your job to find out! Do your research by asking a few open-ended questions, conducting a few polls on Instagram or Facebook, or hopping on a 15-minute call with an ideal reader (we don’t have to keep all interactions online!). Social media makes it so seamless to conduct research so there’s no reason not to embed it in your overall content creation process.
As a former market researcher, I truly believe in the power of taking a walk in your audience’s shoes. I personally became a much more effective content creator through research.
Rinse and Repeat
I wish I could claim that if you followed the four tips above you will be set to create amazing content for life. The truth is, it takes time to understand what resonates and what fall flats (not to mention a lot of trial and error!). There’s no secret formula for creating content but instead, an intuitive feel you develop over time. I encourage you to practice by staying consistent with your content calendar. Commit to creating new content once a week or twice a week or whatever feels reasonable to you…but make sure you get it out there.
In the end, there’s only so many blog posts, articles like this you can read (I have a ton more tips here ). At some point, you just need to get out there and create!
